Orlando’s PremCare Discusses Cholesterol

February 16th, 2012

Cholesterol is necessary for overall health, but if left to high can cause heart disease. Cholesterol is needed to make vitamin D, cell membranes, hormones, and brain development.  There are 2 types of cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), known as the bad cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL), known as the good cholesterol.

The HDL carries cholesterol from the body to the liver, while the LDL carries it form the liver to the body.  The extra LDL cholesterol deposits in the artery walls forming plaque, which can narrow the blood flow and possible blocking it.  The HDL has the reverse effect, taking the extra cholesterol and depositing it where your body needs it.

Many factors contribute to high cholesterol including body weight, eating habits, exercise, age, diet, and family history.  Eating a diet low in saturated and trans fat, which are mostly found in meat and whole milk dairy products, can lower your cholesterol.  Exercise and a healthy diet can help reduce cholesterol.

There are many different types of medications that can help with high cholesterol.  A simple blood test can check your cholesterol levels and help save your life. Contact PremCare for an appointment today.
